Does your hospice team understand service intensity add-on?

Written by Catherine Dehlin, RN, BSN, CHPN, CHCM, Director of Hospice Services for Fazzi

The hospice service intensity add-on (SIA) is intended to recognize that patients and families need more intensive care and services at the very end of life. The SIA offsets the higher costs of those services by offering hospice providers additional reimbursement for them. Specifically, the SIA payment covers direct care provided by a registered nurse or social worker that occurs during the last seven days of life, up to four hours per day – this is in addition to the routine home care per diem reimbursement.

However, at present, two years after the SIA was introduced, it is clear that many hospice organizations have not realized this opportunity to enhance care during the last seven days of life and capture the SIA payment.

Catherine Dehlin, RN, BSN, CHPN, CHCM, Director of Hospice Services for Fazzi Associates has authored an important paper that will help you and your team learn best practices for care in the last seven days of life. Download “Does your hospice team understand service intensity add-on?” to gain a more complete understanding of the SIA benefit and strategies to ensure patients and families receive high quality end of life care.
