Dementia and hospice: what you need to know to avoid penalties and give better guidance

One in three seniors dies with Alzheimer's disease or another dementia. Dementia is one of the most costly diseases in America — costing some $290 billion in 2019, more than heart disease and cancer combined. Although dementia is an increasingly common condition among hospice patients, it remains one of the least understood. When hospice teams are not well informed, they cannot provide effective advice and care to patients and families. Additionally, errors in prognostication and documentation expose hospices to penalties related to CMS claims of ineligibility or excessive lengths of stay. The 2016 OIG report on fraud, abuse and waste in hospice was particularly concerned about the care of patients living with dementia.

Is your hospice doing all it can to maximize your team’s capacity to effectively and compassionately manage this devastating and costly disease?

Watch this free, 60-minute webinar presented by pioneering hospice physician Marcia Levetown, MD, MMM, HMDC, FAAHPM. Dr. Levetown will provide a research-based overview of the forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. She will explore aspects of special interest to members of hospice interdisciplinary teams, such as medications to avoid, the dying process for patients with dementia, and much more.

Watch and learn:

  • How to name and describe the course of the 5 most common forms of dementia
  • How to recognize the terminal phase of various dementias in order to avoid excessive lengths of stay and associated penalties
  • Which dementia patients must avoid almost all antipsychotic medications
  • Why the FAST score pertains only to patients with Alzheimer’s disease and no other forms of dementia

This webinar is your opportunity to deepen your understanding of dementia and learn how to provide exceptional care to patients and families facing these complex and destructive diseases.
