FAQs from the webinar:
The hospice service intensity add-on and best practices for end of life care

Written by Catherine Dehlin, RN, BSN, CHPN, CHCM, COQS

In 2016, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) introduced a service intensity add-on (SIA) payment for routine home care visits by a registered nurse or social worker to meet the increased clinical and emotional needs of patients in the last 7 days of life and their families. However, after two years with this additional benefit, skilled visits at the very end of life have not significantly increased. About 20% of patients do not receive a skilled visit on the day of death. Is your hospice benefiting from the SIA and providing the level of care that your patients and families need?

CMS data reveals an opportunity to integrate clinical, financial, and quality factors to enhance the patient experience in the last days of life, increase patient and family outcomes and satisfaction, and optimize financial performance. The key is learning how.

The hospice service intensity add-on was the topic of a recent 60-minute webinar presented by Catherine Dehlin, RN, BSN, CHPN, CHCM, COQS, Director of Hospice Services at Fazzi Associates — The hospice service intensity add-on and best practices for end-of-life care — now available to watch on demand. Now Catherine answers some of the most popular questions asked during the webinar in this new FAQ document.

Get answers to these questions and many more:

  • Is the hospice SIA based on calendar days or 24-hour periods?
  • Does the hospice chaplain count as part of the SIA?
  • How is SIA affected if the patient dies during continuous care (CC)?
  • Are the hours per day cumulative or do they have to be continuous?
